Driver rescued after crashing through Coral Gables parking garage wall

CORAL GABLES – A woman was rescued after she partially drove off the third floor of a parking garage in Coral Gables.
The driver accidentally accelerated instead of hitting the brake in the garage at 1500 San Remo Avenue, near The Shops at Sunset Place, according to Coral Gables Fire Rescue. They said the car went through a parking garage wall and an adjacent tree kept it from falling to the ground.
Coral Gables Fire Rescue Division Chief Xavier Jones said it could have been a lot worse.
“She got very lucky today. When the car came out of the wall, it landed into a tree. We were able to rescue her in about 20, 30 minutes. We had a firefighter that was lowered by a rope into the vehicle and then we rescued her from there,” he said. 
Kate Lui watched as the rescue happened.
“They put a ladder up to the top and then they hoisted him down, and then he took her from the side,” she said. “That’s a cool guy. I was very impressed with him.” 
Coral Gables Fire Rescue said the woman, who was in her 50s, was taken to an area hospital as a precaution.
